The Weldon Police Department Monday will begin a safe weapons campaign that lasts through the end of next week.

The goal of the program is to make sure no one has a gun that has been reported lost or stolen, Lieutenant Chris Davis said.

“We’re just basically opening up the door for people to bring weapons — shotguns, rifles and pistols — to make sure they’re not stolen,” Davis said. “We’re handing out gunlocks and forms to help keep up with serial numbers. Anyone who has a weapon they don’t want we’ll be glad to take it. We will end up destroying it.”

Davis said a person who brings in a weapon they bought unaware it was stolen won’t be charged. “We will be required to take custody of the weapon.”

Officers will also check on the operational safety of a weapon if requested to do so.

Those who would like their weapons checked are required to bring it unloaded to the police department on Washington Avenue during business hours — 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
