A Roanoke Rapids man was charged today with allegedly possessing marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school.
Roanoke Rapids police, with assistance from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at 733 Jefferson Street and arrested 27-year-old Anthony Rex Watson.
Major Tommy Hathaway of the police department said officers found 75 grams of marijuana along with paraphernalia inside the house.
Execution of the search warrant late this morning was based on neighborhood complaints and officer investigation.
Hathaway said the police department was familiar with alleged narcotics activity at the residence which is just across the street from the high school, an alley and shallow tree line separating the two.
Watson was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school zone, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance.
He was jailed on $50,000 bond. Hathaway said the school zone charge might have been the reason for the higher bond.
