Darius Sykes faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder following a chase this afternoon that ended in the emergency room parking lot of Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Lieutenant Bobby Martin of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said he also faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

The three attempted murder charges reflect his reckless driving as Lieutenant Tim Harris and Detective Herbert Williams, as well as Roanoke Rapids Police Department Sergeant Mike Moseley tried to apprehend him today.

The assault charge reflects crashing with Deputy Harold Phillips.

Martin said detectives are still investigating the initial domestic situation that prompted Sykes’ flight from law enforcement in the Heathsville area.

It is known that Sykes, who was wearing a spit guard while in custody, allegedly attempted to bite off the finger of who is believed to be a family member.

Sykes was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a November 14 court date.
