Mary Tillery shattered several state records on Saturday at the 100% Raw Powerlifting N.C. State Championships in Durham.
Raw means lifting drug-free without assistive equipment other than a weight belt.
Tillery’s squat max was 264.5 pounds.
The 28-year-old Tillery resident bench-pressed 143.2 pounds and deadlifted 319.5 pounds for a total 727 pounds.
The previous records were 195 pounds, 140 pounds, 300 pounds and 635 pounds respectively.

Another from the compeition.
Tillery weighed in at 159 pounds and her record-setting deadlift was a two times bodyweight pull.
She then went on to make a national record attempt but was unsuccessful at deadlifting 358 pounds.
“I thought I probably could better the state record but I was shocked that I actually cracked it off the floor. The atmosphere of the gym was electric. I have never experienced anything quite like it before.”
This was her first powerlifting meet.
Although she has been weightlifting for several years, she trained for three months for the event and competed on a team from Elite Sport and Fitness out of Greenville that broke 11 state records at the meet.
