The State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate a shooting in which a state Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a man in June.

Sergeant Jeff Gordon in Raleigh said this morning Trooper M.W. Pittman remains on administrative duty.

As far as the SBI probe into the death of James Russell Moore, Gordon said, “I can’t say when they will finish that.”

Moore, 64, was killed after Pittman stopped him on Highway 158 west of Roanoke Rapids around 10:30 the evening of June 29.

Pittman smelled alcohol on Moore and ordered him out of the pickup, and then realized that Moore had a gun in his pocket.

He ordered Moore to lie on the ground and not make a move toward the weapon.

The Highway Patrol says Moore ignored repeated orders from the trooper and then reached into his pocket, pulled out a handgun and pointed it toward the trooper "in a threatening manner."

Pittman shot Moore, who died of his injuries after being taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Family members have said they doubt the state Highway Patrol’s claims.
