An Enfield woman and Roanoke Rapids woman died early Wednesday when a tractor-trailer slammed into their Honda Accord on Interstate 95 in the Whitakers area.

Jeanie Michelle Evans, 48, of Enfield, and Sharonda Denise Hendricks, 26, of Roanoke Rapids, died at the scene.

WRAL reported the state Highway Patrol said their late-model Accord was stopped in the right hand lane between mile markers 146 and 147 when it was hit by the tractor-trailer, which was traveling at highway speeds.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, James Myers Jr., 38, was not injured. He was traveling from Pennsylvania at the time.

The wreck blocked both lanes of I-95 for more than two hours as crews worked to clean up the scene.
