The first day at the Kirkwood Adams Community Center Farmer’s Market was slow Monday.

Next Monday, however, promises to be a different story as strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers make their debut, organizers said.

“Some of them were scared off by the threat of rain,” said Matt Stevens, Halifax County Cooperative Extension Service horticulture agent, of the vendors. “We had some to say they’re coming next week.”

Stevens said the idea behind the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market is to give an additional offering other than the one on Highway 158. “We’re expecting five vendors a week, maybe more. We’re talking about getting music out here like the one on Highway 158.”

Main Street Director Lance Jenkins, who coordinated brining the market to Kirkwood, said, “I’m confident it will be a success. We had nice plants and blueberries out here today.”

The Farmer’s Market at Kirkwood is open each Monday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will most likely run through Labor Day.
