The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following crimes over the weekend:

 

On June 1, Deputy J.M. Clark responded to a residence in the Weldon area following a call a female was being assaulted.

He arrived and found the victim had been strangled.

Deputy C.H. Boden found the alleged suspect not far from the scene and charged 23-year-old Alvin Norwood Jr. of Oxford with assault by strangulation and assault on a female.

He was also wanted in Emporia for probation violation and was charged with being a fugitive.

He was placed in the Halifax County Jail without opportunity for bond and given a June 13 court date.

The victim was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

Powell

On June 2 Deputy B. Hedgepeth conducted a traffic stop in the Weldon area.

When he approached the vehicle he could smell marijuana. The vehicle was searched and 18.2 grams was located in the driver’s door.

John Lee Powell was arrested and charged with maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance, felony possession of marijuana and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.

He was jailed on $3,000 bond and has an August 1 court date.

Kidd

On June 3 Corporal C. Scott responded to a breaking and entering call in the Ranch Drive area of Roanoke Rapids.

During the investigation he identified William Thomas Kidd as the alleged perpetrator and charged him with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and possession of stolen goods.

Some of the property was returned to the owner and Kidd was jailed on $3,500 bond. He has a July 18 court date.
