A judge last week modified William Roundtree III’s bond to ban him from all city property.
Roundtree was charged earlier this month with allegedly beating a Roanoke Rapids code enforcement officer who was following up on a nuisance complaint at his property.
In altering the conditions of Roundtree’s release on $10,000 bond Friday, the 48-year-old man is now not allowed to go upon the premises of city hall, the Public Works Department, all Parks and Recreation Department facilities and parks and he is not to have contact with any city employees. The original restriction in his bond release was that he have no contact with the enforcement officer he allegedly assaulted.
Roundtree did not immediately respond to an rrspin.com email request for a comment on the matter.
The warrants filed at the Halifax County Clerk of Courts Office on the matter give some explanation on the charges filed against him May 1 when Code Enforcement Officer Walter Johnson went to check up on a complaint at Roundtree’s house.
The warrant says there was probable cause to charge Roundtree for inflicting serious injury to Johnson requiring medical attention for bruises and swelling to his face, head and body, which explains the assault inflicting serious bodily injury count.
The warrant also says there was probable cause to charge Roundtree with communicating threats when he allegedly told Johnson he “was going to whip his ass.”
A damage to property charge comes from Johnson’s jeans being damaged in the fray and a charge of simple physical assault comes from Roundtree allegedly assaulting Johnson by holding him down and spitting in his face.
The next court date on the matter is scheduled for May 30, according to information contained in the court file.
