The city tonight entered into a contract with state Department of Transportation in which the Public Works Department will use its street sweeper on the Gaston Bridge on Highway 48.
In return, the city will bill the state $100 per hour for the service, not to exceed $10,000 per year.
Public Works Director Larry Chalker said sweeping the bridge helps storm drainage issues.
In a matter related to public works, the city announced today that it has been allotted funds from the state’s Aid for Mosquito Control program.
The program is an initiative of the Environmental Health Section of the N.C. Department of Health & Human Services Division of Public Health.
It was developed to enable local governments with the ability to use local and state resources and technical skills to more efficiently and effectively control mosquito populations and prevent mosquito borne illness.
The department issued a notice of available funds on March 16. Applications were to be submitted by April 6. Allotments were awarded on a countywide basis. The city received its amount of $4,911 last week.
Chalker said the money will pay for the chemicals but the city will most likely have to buy additional larvacide. The money does not pay for personnel needed to do the spraying.
