A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Thursday for allegedly stealing scrap metal belonging to the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Monday morning.

Detective H.L. Williams of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Dillon Wayne Lee Brigman, 19, was charged with misdemeanor larceny, possession of stolen goods and first-degree trespassing at Belmont Elementary School.

Brigman was caught in the area of the soccer field behind Belmont Elementary School around 1:30 a.m. with a load of scrap metal after members of the neighborhood community watch in the area heard noises and called law enforcement.

The responding deputies — P. Massey and H. Phillips, along with the help of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department — caught him with a load of scrap metal in his truck; which was backed into the woods between the soccer field and Belmont Elementary School.

The deputies and officers seized the truck Brigman was driving. Williams then investigated the case and found the metal belonged to the school district. Brigman was charged and placed in jail under a $3,000 bond.

Additionally, Lieutenant George Evans charged Brigman with having stolen property in a separate matter.

Evans stopped Brigman on March 9 and found he allegedly had stolen property from Craig Street. Evans also obtained warrants for felony breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods after conferring with the victim. He was given an additional $7,500 bond.
