A Hollister man was arrested Saturday for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 to buy beer and cigarettes from a store in the Hollister area.
Detective Roy Rooks of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said it is not believed the man arrested, Marshall Lynch, 44, made the bill and an investigation with the U.S. Secret Service is under way to find the origin.
Lynch was arrested by Lieutenant N. Aycock and investigation by Rooks determined that Lynch used a fake bill to buy two 40 ounce bottles of beer and a pack of Newport cigarettes at the store.
The owner of the store didn't realize the bill was fake until after Lynch left but determined it later when he applied a marker test.
Lynch was charged with obtaining property by false pretense and jailed on $1,000 bond. He has a February 15 court date.
