A 30-year-old Roanoke Rapids man died this morning in what the Halifax County Sheriff's Office described as a diving accident in Roanoke Shores.

Detective H.L. Williams said law enforcement received the call between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m.

Kenneth W. Starling, 30, was pronounced dead, and Williams said he is awaiting a medical examiner's report but foul play is not suspected.

Williams declined to confirm unofficial accounts that Starling was diving from a pier and landed in a shallow part of the lake.
