William Roland Massey III was served a warrant from the Halifax County Sheriff's Office last month in Northampton County where he lives for a felony count of cutting or removing another's timber.

It is a case that dates back to January and one in which the original warrant was filed in October, according to Detective J. Sealey of the Halifax County Sheriff's office.

Sealey said the case was worked from January to October to come up with the charge.

Massey was served the warrant by the Northampton County Sheriff's Office November 14 and was since released on $1,500 bond.

The case was reported in January in the Highway 561 area of Enfield, where Massey had a legitimate contract to cut timber but then allegedly cut 8 acres of adjoining land on property that was not in the contract and not owned by the same land owner who had the contract with Massey.

Sealey said the value of the timber cut was $27,750. The law says it falls on Massey to properly mark land he is cutting.

Everette Dameron, the complainant in the case who lives in New York, said his brother saw Massey cutting land on the property and notified authorities.

Dameron would not discuss details of the case, but said timber theft, “Is just like losing money in the stock market.”

This marks the second time Sealey has charged Massey with the same crime but with different victims.

Massey is scheduled for an initial court appearance in Halifax County on the charge on February 15.
