A man who had charges dismissed in two 2009 bank robberies was charged this weekend with possession of cocaine.

Clarence Burgess Jr. was charged by Roanoke Rapids Police Officer Rich Somogyi with possession of cocaine and driving while license revoked.

Captain Andy Jackson said Somogyi observed Burgess in the parking lot of the Presto Saturday night arguing with other people.

When the officer arrived the people Burgess was arguing with walked away.

He said it appeared Burgess was trying to conceal something and threw something to ground.

Somogyi retrieved what was thrown, which was a dollar bill wrapped into a bindle, which contained approximately 2 grams of cocaine.

Burgess admitted he was driving his girlfriend's Cadillac without a license. He received a $2,500 bond.

On October 19, bank robbery charges against Burgess were dismissed because the witness recanted and there was no physical evidence tying him to them, according to court records.

He was charged in the Christmas season robberies of New Republic and First Citizens in 2009.
