The body of a man missing since Thursday was recovered from the Roanoke River this afternoon, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Scott Hall said the  body of James Garrick Roberts, 49, of the Sam Powell Dairy Road area of Roanoke Rapids, was recovered from the river around noon by first responders who have been searching for him since Thursday. Family members were notified.

Hall said Roberts was recovered just south of WestRock.

Hall declined speculation or comment on how Roberts got into the water. He did say in a statement foul play is not suspected in his death and investigation continues.

A family member Friday said Roberts had been depressed but the earliest the family could get him in for help was July 30. The family member said the area of the Gaston boat landing was a place he liked to go to clear his mind.

Hall commended the litany of first responders who aided in the search for the man. “They were here all day Thursday and all day Friday and a half day today. The fact that every agency worked together enabled closure for the family.”
