The state Department of Transportation will have to come back to present its Comprehensive Transportation Plan to Halifax County commissioners after one member challenged the accuracy of maps presented Monday.

The plan gives officials a glimpse of road plans for the next 25 to 30 years, said Kerry Morrow, an engineer with the department.

The plans include making Highway 158 a freeway and include plans to widen Highways 4, 125, 122, 258 and 301.

The plans include rerouting a portion of a Highway 43 to eliminate a five-way intersection at Highway 561 in Hollister, Morrow told commissioners.

Scotland Neck officials, Morrow said, are interested in having a fixed public transportation route from Scotland Neck to Roanoke Rapids, instead of the current as needed program through the Choanoke Public Transportation Authority, the engineer said.

Commissioner Rives Manning, however, wasn't sold. "I have a real problem with the plan."

Manning said maps provided by the department show a big lake between Halifax and Enfield. "I think the maps are wrong."

Manning said the land between Halifax and Enfield is mainly good cropland.

This morning Manning said this is not the first time he has seen incorrect DOT maps. A few years ago there was one which showed a road at the Summit boat landing going across the lake. "They asked us to adopt a plan. They did not show us a plan."

Morrow said the maps were plotted using GIS. If they are inaccurate, Morrow said, "We'll go back and see if that's the case."

Representatives from the department are expected to come back to the commissioners during a meeting planned May 23.
