The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to interim Chief Bobby Martin:

Thursday at approximately 3 p.m. PACE team officers J. DeSare and B. Council were in the area of Woodlawn Street when they heard radio traffic about a person possibly having warrants. Sergeant A. Salmon gave a description of the vehicle and DeSare and Council spotted and stopped it.

The odor of marijuana was coming from the vehicle when the officers approached and the occupants were removed.

A blunt was found.

During a search digital scales were discovered along with metallic knuckles.

The officers also found a plastic bag containing what was believed to be 102 Xanax bars.

The owner of the car was identified as Demandre Hedgepeth, 33, from the Whitakers area.

He was charged with felony possession of schedule IV, possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule IV, felony maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place, simple possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon, and having a prescription with no label present.

He was jailed on $8,500 secured bond with a July 3 court date.

The other occupant was released.

Sergeant J. Hardy, Agent C. Babb, Master Officer M. Hunsucker and his dog Dubai assisted.  

 

Wednesday shortly after 9 a.m. Council and DeSare were patrolling in the area of Hinson and Franklin streets when they noticed a vehicle not completely stop for a stop sign.  

The officers spoke with the driver.

Hunsucker and Dubai were called because of the odor of marijuana in the vehicle.

Dubai indicated the presence of narcotics near the trunk.

A marijuana grinder was located in the back of the vehicle.

The driver, Tyquane Johnson, 24, of Roanoke Rapids, was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

He received a July 3 court date.

 

Wednesday shortly before 11:30 a.m. Officer D. Newsome was on patrol in the area of Premier Boulevard  when he noticed a vehicle cut through a parking lot to avoid a stoplight.

Newsome got behind the vehicle and stopped it on the parking lot of Taco Bell.  

Newsome learned the driver did not have a valid license.

Hunsucker and Dubai arrived to assist.

Dubai indicated for the presence of narcotics and a marijuana grinder with marijuana was discovered.

The driver was identified as Aron Daniel, 21, of the Roanoke Rapids area.

Newsome cited Daniel for simple possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, and no operator’s license.

He has a July 8 court date.

Wednesday shortly before 11:30 p.m., Master Officer R. Cross was stationary on Vine Street conducting speed enforcement.

A vehicle came through the area travelling above the posted speed limit.

Cross conducted a traffic stop and could smell the odor of alcohol.

He also noticed a Mason jar in the floorboard.

Cross conducted a check with his dog Midas, who indicated there was or had been narcotics in the vehicle.

A cigarette pack was discovered and inside the plastic wrapper was a folded dollar bill containing what was believed to be cocaine.

The search revealed marijuana, more cocaine and several pills.

The driver was identified as Jamaull Green, 38, from the Roanoke Rapids area.

The marijuana located weighed 59.20 grams and the cocaine seized weighed 5.90 grams. Green was charged with maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, two counts possession of schedule VI, possession of cocaine, no operator’s license, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Green was carried before a magistrate and placed under a $10,000 bond with a July 3 court date.

Officer J. Shelburne assisted.

Tuesday  shortly before 2:15 p.m., DeSare and Council were patrolling in the area of Highway 158 and Glover Street when they noticed a vehicle displaying a fictitious registration plate.

The officers pulled the vehicle and noticed what appeared to be marijuana near the gear shifter. Marijuana paraphernalia was discovered and the driver had marijuana in his front pocket.

Dearias Pitt, 20, of Roanoke Rapids, was cited for simple possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

He received a July 3 court date.

Tuesday shortly before 3:15 p.m., DeSare and Council were patrolling in the area of Oak and Daniel streets when they noticed a vehicle with a tint violation.

The officers noticed a handgun and magazine in the passenger seat. The weapon was secured and officers continued investigation.

The officers located marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia.

Dennis Sesson, 29, of Roanoke Rapids, was cited for tint violation, possession of schedule VI, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The weapon was seized for further investigation.

Martin said in the statement, “The PACE Team continues to do great work in regards to community policing and working in conjunction with our narcotics unit to battle the drug trade within the city of Roanoke Rapids.”

He also said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the police officers at the Roanoke Rapids Police Department for their hard work and dedication over the last few months. The citizens of Roanoke Rapids should be proud to have officers like we do.

“The men and women at the Roanoke Rapids Police Department work tirelessly to protect and serve the Roanoke Valley, so If you see an officer thank him or her for what they do to protect the citizens of Roanoke Rapids.”
