Marty Jones remembers Pat "Hot Dog" Carter as a child. He also remembers him as a coach in youth basketball leagues at T.J. Davis.

Now Jones wants to help the city and its recreation department remember Carter, who died last week at 51, permanently by raising money for a plaque to be placed at T.J. Davis in Carter's honor.

Since first posting his intention on Facebook, Jones has already received money from from former residents in Raleigh and Greensboro, he said today.

The plaque he envisions will cost about $500 and he would like to raise enough money to present Carter's family with one, also.

Carter made a lasting impression on Jones. "I remember Pat when I was little when I used to hang out there and through the years. He didn't know a stranger. I always looked forward to seeing him before practice or a game."

Jones said his daughter, who he coaches in a recreation league, was upset when she learned Carter died. "I feel like they have lost a bit. He was kind of a mainstay. He would always ask me if I was playing or coaching. It was nice getting that greeting when I came in."

There aren't many people these days who get along with everybody, Jones said. Carter was one of those people who did.

Jones has discussed the matter with Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon who is allowing an envelope to be placed at T.J. Davis for donations.

Donation can also be sent to Jones at 325 Shell Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or he can be reached by cell phone for more information at 252-578-1720.
