Arrest warrants have been issued for two men wanted in a Thursday evening shooting in Weldon.

Captain James Avens of the Weldon Police Department said Alphonso “Tyson” Williams, 22, and Michael “Mike Mike” Ponton Jr., 20, face charges of attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting in an occupied vehicle, assault by pointing a gun and going armed to the terror of the people.

The shooting occurred at 209 Ransome Circle, a house the Weldon Police Department and state Alcohol Law Enforcement are trying to shut down through nuisance abatement laws.

Williams and Ponton, who are brothers, and the victim, Luther Terry, a first cousin of the pair, are frequenters at the house, which has been targeted for drug sales and is known in the Scoco Park community as the Community House and by police as Weldon Police Department Substation South.

There was an argument over money between the cousins and Williams allegedly fired two shots at Terry, one bullet striking him in the arm and going through his chest, Avens said.

Avens didn’t know what the details of the argument were. The gun fired is believed to be a small caliber, semiautomatic handgun.

The two men fled the scene, Williams on a white Lincoln and Ponton on a burgundy Pontiac.

Terry was treated and released from the hospital.

Williams is described as a black make standing between 5 feet, 7 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing approximately 240 pounds.

Ponton is described as a black weighing between 140 to 150 pounds. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the Roanoke Rapids Police Department have helped investigate, Avens said.

The shooting, which occurred around 5:50 p.m., is the second call the police department has responded to at the house this week. On Monday police responded to a shots fired call. No one wanted to cooperate, Avens said.

The Thursday shooting, however, does help the case for nuisance abatement. “Any time you get calls there for any type of crime it’s building the case,” Avens said.

The police department is waiting to hear from ALE on who owns the house, something that has been difficult to trace because it is heir property, Avens said. The house is considered a hotspot for drug sales. “They buy drugs there. I can’t say they do it (use them) on the inside.”

While there have been murders, rapes and other crimes at the house, there are often community functions there, including plate sales, officers said in October while staking the house.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Williams and Ponton is encouraged to call the police department at 252-536-3136 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
