A 31-year-old Roanoke Rapids man died this morning from multiple stab wounds following an argument at a house off Old Halifax Road.

John Butler, 46, of Roanoke Rapids, has been charged in the death of Jeremy “Jay” Hecht, according to Major Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The argument occurred at what Temple described as a social gathering where witnesses saw the stabbing, but he declined to comment on what type event was being held at the house.

The sheriff’s office received the call shortly before 2:45 this morning and found Hecht seriously injured from the stab wounds. He was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Temple declined to say where Hecht was stabbed and what kind of weapon was used or whether the weapon was recovered.

Temple said Hecht and Butler were acquainted.

Butler was jailed without the opportunity for bond and was scheduled for a first court appearance this morning.

Detectives continue to investigate the case.
