Rural Health Group a nonprofit community health center based in Roanoke Rapids, dedicated its newest medical and dental clinic Thursday in Henderson. The center was named in honor of longtime physician Jane H. McCaleb who now serves as the group’s director of clinical care.
McCaleb has provided medical care for Northeastern North Carolina residents since 1979.
After medical school, the Columbia, Missouri, native joined the National Health Service Corps and was eventually recruited by the Office of Rural Health to Northampton County. “She is described best as a catalyst in rural healthcare,” said Brian Harris, MHA, Rural Health Group CEO. “She has made a difference in so many lives over the years and continues to do so.”
McCaleb received state and national recognition for her efforts to reduce infant mortality. “Physicians working in a rural community have to be interested in all facets of primary care and must accept the challenges that arise when treating rural patients who are often limited by poverty, illiteracy, and inadequate transportation systems,” said McCaleb.
Rural Health Group provides integrated medical, dental and behavioral health services for all ages, and the group’s Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Outreach program and Infectious Diseases program are also housed in the Health Center.
Services are offered on a sliding fee scale for those who qualify based on household size and income.
Rural Health Group also accepts private insurance “We want to make sure people understand our clinics are open to everyone,” Harris added.
Founded in 1974 in Jackson, Rural Health Group grew out of a community collaboration of concerned citizens.
The mission of these visionaries was to provide affordable health care services to people living in northeastern North Carolina.
Rural Health Group currently has family practice clinics in Littleton, Hollister, Roanoke Rapids, Jackson, Rich Square, Scotland Neck, Whitakers, Norlina, and Henderson.
There are three comprehensive dental clinics in Jackson, Roanoke Rapids, and Henderson, two in-house pharmacies, and two WIC locations.
Rural Health Group also offers integrated behavioral health, HIV primary care, breast and cervical cancer control program, and a diabetes education program.
