Chief Jeff Hinton presents Chris Woodruff his certificate.

Widow’s Son Lodge will not sponsor this year’s Christmas parade, Roanoke Rapids City Manager Paul Sabiston told council tonight.

That leaves the city looking for groups who would like to sponsor the annual event.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” he said, “But it’s very rewarding. In the middle of September, it’s going to be difficult to put it together at the last minute.”

Sabiston said following the meeting the decision was a split vote among the lodge’s members and some will help out.

Any group wishing to sponsor the parade is encouraged to call the city at 252-533-2840.

Police Chief Jeff Hinton recognized officer Chris Woodruff with his advanced law enforcement certificate. “This is a milestone in his law enforcement career,” the chief said.

Woodruff said getting the certificate took long hours and hard work.

Council agreed to delay demolishing a house at 207 Medlin Street because of the work the owner has put into restoring it. Progress will be monitored over the next month.
