In the last 24 hours, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department has received numerous reports of automated phone calls purportedly from Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank saying customer credit, debit and checking accounts have been compromised.

These calls are scams, Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said this morning, and are designed to access account information.

One call was made to the Halifax County 911 Center’s non-emergency line. The automated caller asks customers to go through a series of numbers the scammers hope will give them access to account numbers.

“Roanoke Rapids Savings Bank is a longtime business here,” Bondarek said. “They are a reputable, good bank. This is absolutely no fault of theirs. It could happen to any other institution.”

Investigators are working with the bank to solve the matter. “It’s another example of if you get a call that doesn’t sound right (don’t give information). Be very wary of bad guys bearing gifts,” Bondarek said.

The police department doesn’t know whether these calls are being generated locally and they are unaware if anyone has been taken by this scam. “We are fearful some people may have,” Bondarek said.

Anyone who receives these calls should hang up and may call 911 to report them.
