It’s not often the United Daughters of the Confederacy presents a military service awards display.

On September 6, however, the UDC will present one to the Dallas Jones Roanoke Valley Veterans Center at Becker Village Mall. The event begins at 10 a.m.The display will be presented by state chapter President Emily Champion during the center’s monthly veterans tribute. The September tribute honors Samuel Hampton Page, a sergeant in the Marine Corps during World War Two.

The shadow box containing the collection of individual awards, which the UDC gives to veterans whose lineage can be traced to the Civil War, will be displayed permanently at the museum, said Martha Denton, president of the Roanoke Rapids chapter.The only award anticipated not being in the display is the Southern Cross because it so rare.

“They don’t do this very often,” Denton said, explaining the last time it was done was four years ago. “You have to go through channels.”

George Willis, president and CEO of the center, said it is an honor to receive the display. “It’s a very prestigious award.”
