The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has concluded a Portsmouth, Va., man died when the boat he was driving struck him in the head as it overturned when he hit a boat dock.
Officer Richard Creech told The Spin today the family requested an autopsy not be done on John Scruggs, 57, who was reported missing early Saturday morning.
Wildlife initially said autopsy results would help enforcement officers determine how Scruggs, found underneath his boat, died. Creech said family members, however, told Wildlife an autopsy didn’t need to be done.
The man’s boat was found next to a boat dock in the Norcarva subdivision about 4 miles from Eaton Ferry Bridge, Roanoke-Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department Chief Stewart “Butch” Garnett said Saturday. Members of the Churchill Five Forks Volunteer Fire Department found the boat upside down around 10:30 Saturday morning, he said.
Scruggs, who has a weekend home on the lake, was last seen in the ski boat around 1 p.m. Friday, Garnett said. Family members were scheduled to come down Saturday. When they didn’t hear from Scruggs they notified emergency officials and a search began.
The first search was conducted until 4 a.m. and resumed later until the boat was found near the Virginia line in Warren County.
