A natural gas leak in Weldon has been contained and an evacuation order rescinded. Incident Commander Jamie Warren of the Weldon Fire Department said crews repaired the rupture around 4:30 p.m.

Those in the evacuation area, from Elm Street to Seventh and Ninth streets, had the opportunity to go to First Baptist Church on West Third Street.
The county enacted its disaster response plan and arrived at the church 15 minutes after receiving the call, Halifax County Department of Social Services Director Mike Felt said at the church.
The shelter expected between 30 to 50 people to show up but none did, Felt said. “This is what we do in case of disaster. We were in place and ready to serve.”
A Red Cross van was parked outside the church to help people. This was the first time since the 2008 brush fires an emergency shelter was opened in the county.
The leak occurred when crews were cleaning drains and a pipe was hit, Fire Chief Rusty Bolt said.
The rupture was reported around 2 p.m. No one was injured.
