A call about a suspicious person near a bread store led to the arrest Tuesday of a man charged in two other high profile city crimes for carrying a knife and a gas powered BB pistol.

It is unclear why the man was carrying the knife and gun, which resembled a real semiautomatic pistol, Roanoke Rapids Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said this morning.

The call not only led to Phillip Bernard Brown’s arrest for carrying a concealed weapon but enabled officers to serve the 36-year-old Roanoke Rapids man a warrant for an armed robbery earlier this year.

Brown was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of resisting arrest and three counts of felony contempt of court and perjury.

The armed robbery warrant stems from November 30 when 55-year-old Larry Welles answered the door at his house at 77 Hamilton Street around 8:30 p.m. and found a woman asking him for money.

He gave her 50 cents and following that a person described as a black male pushed his way inside and demanded money. A struggle ensued and Welles was stabbed. The woman was identified as Sharde Keisha Coles, 22, and the man was identified as Brown.

Coles was wanted for felony conspiracy and Brown was wanted for robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and felony conspiracy.

Last August Brown was charged with accosting a 50-year-old woman in the downtown Food Lion parking lot and robbing her. A man armed with a knife and a second person with him took the victim’s purse and fled on foot.

While searching the area, a witness told police the two fled to 134 Hamilton Street where Brown was arrested for robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of stolen property.

Also arrested was Ian Barkley Coles, 17, of 134 Hamilton Street. He was charged with aid and abet robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of stolen property. He was jailed on $10,000 bond.

For the latest charges Brown was jailed on $155,000 bond and has a July 23 court date.
