On June 10 at 7 p.m,, when officers were called to a residence on Halifax Street in reference to a damaged door, they thought they were answering just another property damage call -- but it was more to it than that.
A 13-year-old resident told officers that 19-year-old Jamal Gillus III had given him marijuana and told him to sell it.
But the pot was stolen from him by someone else and the child did not have the money to give to the adult who was trying to get him to sell the illegal drug.
The suspect, armed with a handgun, pursued the child as he ran home and demanded the money for the marijuana he had given him to sell, according to Capt.. Todd Anderson.
That is when Gillus allegedly began beating on the child's door, damaging it.
Emporia officers located Gillus at 705 West Atlantic St., in a local parking lot. When searched by the officers, they found several bags of marijuana.
Gillus was charged with Causing a Juvenile to Distribute Marijuana (felony), Possession of Marijuana, Property Damage, and Brandishing a Firearm. He was placed in Southside Regional Jail under a $5,000 bond.
