A detention officer found five bags of marijuana in a sock while processing an inmate who later Saturday allegedly swiped a can of tobacco off a detective’s desk, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Lieutenant Chuck Hasty said Detective Tyree Davis received a report from Officer Harold Burgess while processing Joshua James Vaughan of Roanoke Rapids that he found marijuana.

Vaughan was charged with possession of a controlled substance in jail. 

He was also charged with larceny and possession of tobacco in jail after Hasty said he tried to steal the tobacco from Detective James Matthews’ desk. He was jailed on $2,000 bond and has a July 14 court date.

In another matter Lieutenant Bobby Martin reported deputies on June 1 responded to a call at the Department of Social Services about someone cutting the fuel lines of two vehicles and stealing the fuel.

Sergeant Randy Keaton and Deputy Danny Radford responded to the area and further investigation resulted in the arrest of 44-year-old Keith Domonic Jones of Roanoke Rapids.

Jones was charged with misdemeanor larceny and injury to personal property. He was jailed on $1,000 bond and has a June 22 court date.

Martin told rrspin.com Jones allegedly placed plastic cups under the vehicles to collect the gas. Firefighters were called to the area because of the amount of gas spilled.
