The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a scam where someone claiming to be with BB&T is requesting financial information and account numbers to access money from bank overdraft accounts.

Detective Tyree Davis said the number on caller ID is a BB&T number but the bank doesn’t call people to access their accounts.

The person who reported this scam told the sheriff’s office when he pressed 1 for more information he was prompted to enter financial information such as account numbers. The person hung up.

Davis said the sheriff’s office is warning people, especially the elderly, to not fall for this scam and simply hang up the phone.
