A Roanoke Rapids area man was jailed on $1,150,000 bond after allegedly beating and shooting his girlfriend Sunday morning.

Detective James Matthews of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office charged Antonio Keashawn Mitchell, 27, with felony assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill inflicting serious injury, two felony counts of first degree kidnapping, felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, felony assault by strangulation and resisting a public officer.

Lieutenant Bobby Martin said deputies were called to the scene in the Roanoke Rapids area around 1:30 a.m.

Lieutenant George Evans, Matthews and Deputy Dreher Bozard arrived and found that one person was been shot. A suspect was detained on scene and further investigation revealed he allegedly beat and shot the victim, who is recovering.

Martin said two other victims who were in bed and were going to try to help the victim were forced at gunpoint to stay.

Mitchell was given a court date of June 30.
