Two men charged in separate murders are on the administrative hearing calendar in superior court this week, Halifax County District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey confirmed today.

Tavarus “Tata” Ivey is expected to have a trial date set during his administrative hearing. Ivey is charged with killing Corey “Biscuit” Graham in the parking lot of the Interstate BP last March.

Meanwhile, Gene Arnold “Root Root” Hawkins is scheduled for an administrative hearing Thursday morning in which attorneys will ask the court to approve seeking discovery that could lead them to file a motion under the state’s Racial Justice Act.

Under the act, no person shall be subject to or given a sentence of death, based on race.

Hawkins was charged in the February 2006 shooting death of businessman Shelby Salmon. Pelfrey said she will seek the death penalty based on the facts of the case and statutes.
