About $25,000 of the $200,000 the city received from the Golden Leaf Foundation will go to the Main Street coordinator in Roanoke Rapids. Another $12,000 to $15,000 will go to marketing and advertising.

“That will help them out a lot,” said City Manager Paul Sabiston of the Roanoke Avenue Business Alliance, which coordinated the Main Street program. Naming of a coordinator could come as early as this week.

The towns in Halifax County will share $150,000, he said.

The money will be used for street scape improvements in all towns of the county, which was applied for under the name: Halifax County Resolves ... To Bring Our Downtowns Together.

“The driving force behind this initiative is the preservation and restoration of the cultural and historic significance of the seven downtown areas in the overall development of Halifax County,” the application said.

The Golden Leaf Foundation will advise municipal officials on the next steps, Sabiston said.
