Herman “Ham” Hargrove Jr. never sought anything for his deeds to the community.
“Naming the Interstate 95/US 158 Bridge in honor of Herman R. ‘Ham’ Hargrove would be a tremendous gesture of appreciation for his unselfish service and dedication to the Town of Weldon and Halifax County,” his son, Michael, wrote in a letter to City Manager Paul Sabiston.
Council tonight agreed to put the matter on its regular session agenda for next Tuesday.
In the letter Hargrove notes, “My father gave unselfishly to the young people of our community by coaching baseball in the 1960’s. He dedicated his life to promote and serve the Town of Weldon and never sought recognition for his deeds.”
The elder Hargrove, who died in 2008, served on many area boards and bought the L.C. Draper Agency in 1956. “His interests were always broader than making money and he used his leadership skills as a founding member of the Halifax County Insurance Exchange and the Weldon Business Bureau.”
