A grenade found in the vehicle of a man charged with littering and other counts Friday was found not to be live following an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
Lieutenant K. Melton of the Weldon Police Department said the grenade was discovered in the passenger seat of the vehicle David Lance Berwick was driving, following a traffic stop by Officer C.L. Foster at the corner of Elm and Third streets.
Melton said Berwick, of Roanoke Rapids, allegedly threw what the warrant described as a "green leafy substance" from the window before coming to a complete stop.
That’s when Foster noticed what appeared to be a live grenade in the seat. The SBI was notified and a bomb unit arrived to investigate. The grenade was ultimately determined not to be live.
Berwick was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of a device to defraud a drug screening test, altering or destroying evidence, resisting, delaying, or obstructing an officer, littering, and possession of an item that could be converted into a weapon of mass destruction.
Berwick, who has a pending charge for possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, remains in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond.
He has a May 28 district court date.
