Northampton County Assistant Jail Administrator A. Jeffries graduated from the Jail Administrators Institute of Leadership this week.

JAIL was hosted by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association in Chapel Hill.

“I congratulate Captain Jeffries for completing the difficult but rewarding work this week and during week one late last year, earning a graduation certificate from the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association,” Sheriff Jack Smith said. “Captain Jeffries is a superior assistant jail administrator, and this training will help her continue to serve with the highest level of expertise and keep Northampton County’s jail running smoothly.”

North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association President Ricky Buchanan, sheriff of McDowell County is grateful that so many jail administrators from across North Carolina are taking initiative to better their leadership for the benefit of their county jails. “This year, 50 jail administrators have graduated from JAIL. It is an honor to be among such dedicated professionals who are serious about the leadership and professionalism needed to operate a detention facility. I look forward to seeing how this Institute will benefit each participating county in the future”

JAIL is one of several training institutes offered by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association. It is a two-week long intensive training program for county jail administrators.

During weeks one and two of JAIL, jail administrators from across North Carolina attended a series of training classes covering topics including North Carolina jail rules and inspections, law enforcement recordings, ethical leadership, emergency preparedness, safekeepers, extraditions, social media, workplace resilience, and leadership. 

JAIL also included panel discussions and opportunities for collaboration among students and their colleagues.

Jail administrators are responsible for the day-to-day operation of a county detention facility, ensuring the jail runs efficiently and effectively on behalf of the county sheriff. 

JAIL was developed by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association to promote effective leadership among North Carolina county jail administrators by providing high-quality training classes, mentoring and resources for both new and veteran jail administrators.
