A mechanical malfunction in a camper sparked a structure fire Sunday afternoon that displaced two residents and claimed the life of a family pet, according to the Weldon Fire Department.

Weldon Deputy Chief Ben Sloan said the town’s fire department, along with units from Halifax and Rheasville, were dispatched to 13 West Third Street at 12:15 p.m. following reports of a camper on fire close to a residence.

Weldon Engine 4 arrived on the scene in just over four minutes to find an RV fully engulfed in flames only three feet from the home. Heavy smoke was already pouring from the house as high winds pushed the fire from the vehicle into the structure.

While the occupants had safely evacuated, they reported that a dog was still missing inside the smoke-filled home.

As incident command was established, the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department was requested for additional manpower. Firefighters deployed handlines to both the RV and the front door of the residence.

Interior crews made a push into the home to search for the pet while simultaneously working to extinguish the spreading flames. Firefighters located the dog and transitioned it to the care of Halifax County EMS; however, the animal ultimately succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control and remained on the scene for approximately two hours to check for hidden fire extension and to extinguish hot spots.

The American Red Cross is assisting the two displaced residents. No injuries to civilians or emergency personnel were reported.

Investigators believe the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction within the RV.

“We would like to thank our neighboring agencies with their assistance with this incident,” Sloan said.

A total of 25 firefighters responded to the call.

Assisting agencies included the Halifax, Rheasville, and Roanoke Rapids fire departments, Halifax County EMS, the Weldon Police Department, and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.
