After two straight weekends of inclement weather, the National Weather Service in Raleigh says there are still lingering impacts from this past weekend — namely dangerous cold and the recurring threat of black ice.
Sunny skies today will aid in melting existing snow.
However, clear and bitter cold conditions tonight will cause any meltwater to refreeze, leading to patchy black ice concerns for the Tuesday morning commute.
Tuesday will be slightly warmer but dry during the day. A period of light rain is expected to move across the state Tuesday night through Wednesday.
As the rain exits, it could end as a brief period of very light snow through Thursday morning. This is expected to be a low-impact event. Thursday will be colder but dry.
Another front will approach late in the week. It should move through Friday night — likely staying dry — followed by a fresh blast of cold arctic air for the weekend.
There is a clear signal in long-term data that temperatures will continue to trend below normal for mid-February.
Precipitation signals remain unclear, with near-normal amounts currently expected.
