Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:
Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Weldon Police Department
Two men wanted in a December 16 shooting that left two victims injured in Weldon are in custody, the sheriff’s office and police department confirmed.
Weldon Police Chief Christopher Davis said in a statement Wednesday that Aki Thomas and Don’Tayvious Cotton were both arrested by the sheriff’s office and remain in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond.
Thomas, 21, of Seaboard, was arrested by Deputy T. Morales on Tuesday when he arrived for court.
Morales served an outstanding warrant to Thomas that had been filed by Detective H. Cross for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious bodily injury, injury to personal property, injury to real property, going armed to the terror of the people, and discharging a firearm within city limits.
Major Anzell Harris of the sheriff’s office said Thomas has a January 20 district court date. Cotton, according to detention center records, has a January 22 district court date.
Davis said last month the shooting was possibly the result of a prior dispute between the suspects and the victims.
Davis noted the investigation began after he received a call shortly after 2:45 p.m. regarding a large fight near East Sixth and Cedar streets involving approximately 50 to 100 people. While traveling to the scene, Davis received another call from the 911 center stating someone had been shot.
There was no fight at the site the caller had referenced; however, Davis learned the shooting occurred near the 700 block of Cedar Street. No one at that location was cooperative. Police did learn that two people were taken to ECU Health North Hospital. One victim has been treated and released, and the other remains in stable condition, the chief said.
Northampton County Sheriff’s Office
Chief Detective Ashley Collier reported that on December 23, John Allen Mitchell III was arrested by the Pender County Sheriff’s Office for breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and injury to property involving nonferrous metals.
On December 29, Pender County served the Wilson man with Northampton County warrants for the larceny of $13,632 worth of copper from a business located in Jackson, according to the arrest warrants.

Mitchell, 32, was charged with three counts of breaking and entering and three counts of larceny after breaking and entering.
Collier said the Northampton County charges resulted from three investigations conducted by Lieutenant M. Deloatch regarding crimes reported on November 14, November 20, and December 3.
A judicial official noted in eCourts documents that Mitchell has multiple pending cases in Wilson County.
His next district court date in Northampton County was not immediately available.
