Willingham presents Wray the order.

In a ceremony marked by tributes and recognition of public service, former North Carolina  Representative Michael Wray of Gaston was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian honor Wednesday night in Roanoke Rapids.

The event also marked the kick-off of Wray’s campaign to regain his state House District 27 seat against current incumbent Rodney D. Pierce.

Bestowed by Governor Josh Stein, the award was formally presented by Representative Shelly Willingham of Rocky Mount, Wray’s longtime seatmate in the State House.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service to the state and their communities, going above and beyond the call of duty.

Since its inception in 1963, the award has recognized North Carolinians whose contributions have made a significant impact and strengthened the fabric of the state.

Willingham praised Wray’s dedication, stating, “Michael Wray’s career in public service is a testament to the values of commitment, integrity, and compassion. His work for Halifax, Northampton, and Warren counties and the people of North Carolina has left a lasting legacy, and it is my honor to present him with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.”

Willingham said of Wray, “Michael has always put the needs of his constituents first. His leadership, mentorship, and friendship have made a difference not only in Gaston but across our state. Presenting this award to him is a privilege.”

Wray served 20 years in the North Carolina House of Representatives, championing issues such as rural economic development, education, and healthcare access.

His colleagues and community members gathered to celebrate his achievements and express gratitude for his years of service on Wednesday night at the Weldon Mills Theatre in Roanoke Rapids.

The ceremony concluded with Wray expressing his appreciation: “I am deeply humbled by this honor. Serving our district and the people of North Carolina has been the greatest privilege of my life. I share this recognition with my family, colleagues, and all those who work every day to make our state better.”
