Three incumbent Roanoke Rapids Graded District Board of Trustees are up for re-election this year.

Incumbents Cathy Keeter, Steven Ellis, and Jeff Kloss are being challenged by Jim Whitmire and Carlton Ansley.

The following are Whitmire’s answers to campaign questions:

Why do you want a seat on the Board of Education?

To provide the, absolute, best education experience for the students of the RRGSD through honest and transparent leadership.

Have you served previously?

No

What experiences do you bring to the board that will assist you in fulfilling the obligations and duties of the Board of Education?

I have devoted my life to the youth of our community serving in several different capacities.   Instructional League Director for RR Youth Basketball, Board of Directors for RR Youth Baseball Association, Past President of The Optimist Club, current President of the RRHS Sports Club, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, and proud father of past graduates of RRGSD.

My hands-on experience makes me uniquely qualified for this position.

What do you see as the biggest challenge for our school system and what suggestions do you have for improvement?

Returning our school system to the highest levels of academic achievement possible, across the board. This is achievable by offering strong leadership that supports teachers and students.   Being transparent in the approach and administration of all issues and initiatives. Creating an environment of mutual respect and confidence.

What do you see as the greatest strength for our school system and what suggestions do you have for capitalizing on that strength?

Our greatest strength is our people, all of our people.   We have a tremendous foundation of educators and students that deserve support that instills the confidence to succeed.   Open, honest, consistent and transparent leadership will pay huge dividends for success in all aspects of education for RRGSD.

What should be the role of a board member in the day-to-day operation of the school district?

A board member must be involved and in touch with all aspects of the school system.   Attending school functions, touring facilities, interacting with staff and students regularly, and being involved with the community and parents publicly. Actively listening to the needs and wants of teachers, students and parents. But, most importantly, acting in the people’s best interest, with integrity and transparency. This makes the board member accountable and effective for all involved in our school system.
