Jordan cuts the ribbon.

The Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce, Roanoke Rapids City Council and other officials celebrated the opening of the new Sonic Drive-in on Tenth Street with a ribbon cutting this morning.

The popular drive-in reopened last week on the same property the former eatery occupied.

While the new drive-in has two less stalls than the former Sonic, Christopher Diven, area supervisor for D.L. Rogers Corporation which owns the Roanoke Rapids store, said that is made up through a new drive-through and the ability for customers to order in the patio area.

There is also a new playground area. There is still some landscaping to complete, Diven said.

The buzz of the drive-in’s soft opening last week has made it number one in sales every day of its operation, Diven said. “We might set a record with first week sales. People were chomping at the bit. We appreciate it so much. It’s been wonderful.”

Said manager Andrea Jordan: “I’m just excited.”
