The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to interim Chief Bobby Martin:

Saturday at approximately 3:22 p.m., Officer R. Cross was in the area of Thirteenth and Marshall streets working traffic when he observed a burgundy vehicle approaching him at a speed faster than the posted limit.

Cross stopped the vehicle and talked with the driver. The officer noticed the smell of marijuana.

The driver was identified as Martez Macon, 22, of Roanoke Rapids.

Cross located marijuana in the vehicle and the driver was cited for possession of marijuana and given a city ordinance for the speeding violation.

On Sunday at approximately 9:37 p.m., Officer J. Rowland and Lieutenant B. Norton responded to a domestic violence call in the 400 block of Kemp Avenue.

The officers discovered there had been an assault and an attempted burglary.

A man officers encountered when they arrived was placed under arrest and identified as Bryson Jenkins, 19, of Roanoke Rapids.

Through further investigation the officers learned an assault occurred along with the discharge of a weapon.

Jenkins was charged with felony attempted first-degree burglary, felony assault by strangulation, assault on a female, discharging a weapon within the corporate limits of Roanoke Rapids, simple possession of a schedule VI substance, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

He was jailed without opportunity for bond on the assaults; a $25,000 bond for the attempted burglary count and a $2,000 bond for the remaining non-domestic counts.

He has a May 10 court date.
