Roanoke Rapids police today filed two murder warrants against Ju-Quan Letrae Rawles in the Wednesday shooting deaths of two men at Presto on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.

Rawles, 26, was previously charged with obstruction of justice in the deaths of Anthony Shearin and Desean Banks.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Lawrence Wiggins said in a statement today that the initial investigation shows that Rawles allegedly shot and killed Shearin in response to a fight that Banks and Shearin had the previous night.

On Wednesday, Banks, accompanied by Rawles, confronted Shearin in the store, and that was the start of the altercation that ultimately turned deadly, Wiggins said.

It was not immediately clear why Banks was shot when he and Rawles were confronting Shearin. There was no immediate reply to requests seeking clarification.

Wiggins said Shearin was in possession of a firearm at the time of the shooting, which was confirmed stolen.

Rawles was jailed without the opportunity for bond, according to eCourts records, and has a Tuesday district court appearance.

In the warrant charging Rawles with obstruction of justice, Lieutenant Morgan Worrell wrote that he left the scene of the shooting, changed clothes, and concealed the weapon used.

In a statement late Wednesday night, Wiggins said Banks was found deceased outside the store around 1 p.m., while Shearin was found inside the store with gunshot wounds. He was initially taken to ECU North and then to Greenville for further treatment but later died from his injuries.

The case remains under investigation, the chief said.
