Twenty-eight CSX coal cars derailed Sunday afternoon outside of the Enfield town limits located west of Franklin Street, the company said in a statement today.
The derailment occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on a mainline used for passenger service.
The 28 cars were loaded with coal and CSX said local authorities were notified.
CSX said there were no injuries reported. There were no hazmat leaks or spills, and there was no threat to the surrounding community. “CSX crews are currently on scene and working as safely and quickly as possible to clean up the impacted site.”
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation.
Halifax County Sheriff Tyree Davis said CSX informed emergency communications. “They didn’t request any assistance. There was nothing hazardous, it wasn’t in the town and it wasn’t close to town.”
Halifax County Emergency Management Coordinator Buddy Wrenn said the derailment occurred about 2.4 miles from the town in an area that is directly behind Binderholz. “There was a lot of kinetic damage to the tracks.”
Wrenn said CSX reported the derailment to the state and the state in turn notified local authorities.
There was material on the embankment and unprocessed coal did get into a swampy area.
Wrenn said CSX contacted an environmental company for cleanup.
The website trains.com reported today that the derailment did cause at least 11 Amtrak trains to be canceled all or in part, information which was gleaned from Amtrak Alerts and Amtrak Northeast social media feeds.
