A vehicle collision Tuesday night claimed the life of a road crew member setting up for a lane closure on Interstate 95, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
A North Carolina State Department of Transportation spokesman said the person who died was an employee of Thalle Construction, which is working on the Highway 158, Highway 46 widening project in Northampton County.
First Sergeant Levern Bynum of the NCSHP said Dameian Webb of Garysburg was struck by a vehicle in the southbound lane of the interstate at the 173 exit in Roanoke Rapids around 9:15 p.m. He died as a result of his injuries.
Bynum said the NCSHP Collision Reconstruction Unit has been consulted and is going to aid Troop C District 8 in the investigation. “Everything is being thoroughly investigated and no charges have been filed at this time.”
The primary investigation was conducted by Trooper J.J. Lynch with Sergeant R.P. Dennis and several members of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department assisting.
“We are saddened to hear about the tragic incident involving a Thalle Construction employee,” NCDOT said in a statement. “The incident happened while working in our U.S. 158 and N.C. 46 widening project in Northampton County.”
Said the statement: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the worker as well as Thalle Construction. NCDOT stresses the importance of safety on all roadways, and especially in work zones.”
