A house on Pine Drive appears to be repairable following a fire Saturday evening, according to the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the residence in the 700 block around 8 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the front, Battalion Chief B.J. Harris said.

All occupants were out of the residence and firefighters located the fire in the living room, extinguishing the flames as a second crew conducted a search.

The living room and adjacent room sustained most of the fire damage while the rest of the home received smoke and heat damage. “The quick response by on-duty firefighters, which consisted of seven B-shift personnel, was instrumental in containing the flames and stopping the spread throughout the rest of the home,” Harris said in a statement.

Fire crews remained on scene for roughly one and a half hours, conducting overhaul operations. The fire appeared to have started in the living room in the area of some extension cords.

Ten off-duty firefighters were called in to assist.

Also assisting the fire department were Halifax County EMS, Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, and the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.
