The men had holed up in a nearby residence where a suspicious vehicle was located. Deputies and Roanoke Rapids police officers surrounded the residence and coaxed them out through a call out. Several people were detained but Powell, who had recently been released from prison, and Smith were taken into custody and booked into the Halifax County Detention Center early this morning. They remain in custody without the opportunity for bond and are scheduled for first district court appearances Friday.
Deputies and Roanoke Rapids officers responded to the store following an armed robbery call around 9 p.m.
Powell and Smith face charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy. Powell also faces a charge of possession of a weapon by a felon.
