Events recognizing Lafayette’s tour begin at 1 p.m. at Historic Halifax on February 27, leading up to a reenactor’s arrival by horse-drawn carriage at 5 p.m., coming up King Street from near the former Andrew Jackson School.
His arrival will be marked by cannon fire and the ringing of bells as he is escorted to Eagle Tavern where he will be welcomed as the last surviving general from the Revolutionary War.
He’ll then proceed to the Hen and the Hog for the ticketed dinner. “The evening event will reenact the hospitality of the citizens of Halifax in their gratitude to Lafayette with the original 13 toasts given to him in Halifax on this date, 200 years ago,” the historic site said.
In 1824, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to visit the United States on a farewell tour in preparation for the 50th anniversary of independence.
The next day, Lafayette, portrayed by Samuel Powell and dressed as the general, will arrive in Enfield at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 28.
He will be welcomed by a reenactor portraying Joseph Branch at The Cellar, 404 Sherrod Heights in Enfield.
The public is invited to this welcome ceremony and are encouraged to tour the house, listen to the music, have refreshments, and review the displays.
